Environmental Economist

as Integrated Expert

We are looking for you:

The World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) has been working since 1978 as a non-commercial research institute on solutions for sustainable land use with trees in the tropics and subtropics. Together with the Center for International Forestry Research CIFOR, it generates and shares knowledge on the importance and contributions of trees to global challenges related to climate change, food security, biodiversity loss, poverty alleviation, soil fertility and social inequality. From its HQ location in Nairobi, ICRAF plays a central role as a research partner in the fight against desertification in the Sahel and an actor in the multi-stakeholder platform Great Green Wall Initiative (GGWI) to re-green the Sahel. ICRAF also supports the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative to combat global processes of land degradation and soil fertility loss.

Your tasks will involve:

  • Representation of ICRAF-CIFOR's interests in the ELD working group on the economic valuation of ecosystems and the development of sustainable, resilient forms of land use
  • Strengthening the capacities and skills of local partner experts in the application of economic analysis and evaluation methods and tools for calculating return on investment scenarios for alternative land use systems with trees.
  • Conducting economic analyses for alternative land use systems
  • Technical management of specific research projects
  • Networking with stakeholders from research and development for the sustainable use and utilization of trees to improve the economic, social and ecological basis for rural, resource-poor households

Your profile:

  • Academic degree in Economics linked to Agriculture, Forestry or  Environmental Management (PhD level desired)
  • Atleast 5 years working experience on economic analyses of soil restoration projects
  • Relevant working experience in Africa
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French, including scientific writing skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability and motivation to work in diverse, multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams
